Ensuring open government while protecting individual privacy
Government Transparency
The Office of Information Practices (OIP) administers two laws designed to promote open and transparent government in the State of Hawaiʻi. These laws help ensure that local government conducts itself in a way the public can observe and participate in, while also protecting personal privacy rights guaranteed under the Hawaiʻi State Constitution.
Open Records
The Uniform Information Practices Act (UIPA) gives the public the right to request access to government records. It ensures that people can see and obtain records from state and county agencies, helping government operate openly and accountably.

The Sunshine Law requires that meetings of government boards and commissions be open to the public. It allows people to take part in the decision-making process by observing discussions and providing opportunity to share input – so community voices can stay informed and help shape policy decisions that affect us.
