At the date of your lease Kalanimoku had not the direction of this kingdom but Kaahumanu. She was above Kalanimoku, wherefore he could not transfer any land for a long time without consent of Kalanimoku. Furthermore that land did not belong to Kalanimoku...and the land is in the hands of Kaahumanu’s heirs.

Her Majesty's Government have as yet received no report of these proceedings from the admiral commanding her Majesty’s Naval Forces in the Pacific; consequently they are unable to form any correct judgement respecting them.
