Starting February 2020 – NEW Security Procedures at the Hawaiʻi State Archives

Posted on Jan 20, 2020 in HSA News

As caretakers of unique, historical and irreplaceable treasures of the State from the Kingdom to present day, the Hawaiʻi State Archives has an enormous responsibility to ensure these materials are available for research, study and purview to the public now and in the future. The care and protection of the collections are a critical part of the function and existence of the archives, therefore new security measures are being implemented by the Public Archives. Please review the following changes and we thank you in advance for your understanding and support of the Hawaiʻi State Archives.

  • All visitors upon entering the Public Archives will check-in/register in our Patron Registration system
  • All visitors will check in with the Security Guard and give a current government issued photo ID (i.e. driver’s license, State ID, passport, etc.) in exchange for a badge to conduct research and/or enter the research room
  • All loose papers entering the research room will be stapled by the Security Guard if you wish to bring them in (if you do not want them to be stapled, we ask you leave them in your free locker)
  • Only bound materials (notebooks, books, papers bound in binders) are allowed into the Research room, which will be inspected before entry and again as you exit
  • No food or drinks are allowed into the research room
  • All bags, purses, folders and any containers must be stored in a locker
  • Summary of rules and procedures can be found here: https://ags.hawaii.gov/archives/about-us/archives-research/public-use-of-archives/

We look forward to your visit and the wonderful discoveries that we hope you will find! Aloha!
