Mele from the Paul Markham Kahn Collection

Paul Markham Kahn (1935-1997), a professional actuary working in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, was a private collector of historical books, manuscripts, engravings, maps, newspapers, and photographs relating to Hawaiʻi. Employing a methodical approach to collecting and a mantra of “always acquire the best possible copy,” Kahn was able to amass one of the finest private collections of historic Hawaiian printed material in the world. In 1990, the State of Hawaiʻi purchased the Kahn Collection for its Public Archives.
