Public Invited To Paint Mural at DAGS Building
Posted on Oct 31, 2025 in MainHONOLULU – The Department of Accounting and General Services Director and Comptroller Keith Regan invites the public to help paint a community mural in the basement parking garage.
When: Saturday, Nov. 29, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (drop in as your schedule permits)
Where: Kalanimoku Building, 1151 Punchbowl Street – basement parking garage, mauka wall
Who: Solomon Enos, Artist-In-Residence for State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) (an agency attached to DAGS), will be leading a public painting project to beautify a basement wall in the DAGS parking garage.
Details: This wall in the parking garage is often the first area that greets people who arrive at the Kalanimoku Building, which houses offices for both DAGS as well as the Department of Land and Natural Resources. DAGS wants to convey the story of the kind of work and professional relationships that occur within the walls of Kalanimoku Building, so it asked artist-in-residence Solomon Enos to create an image. He developed an abstract pattern that represents a net; “Nets carry, capture, gather and also symbolize networks,” Enos explained.
In October, DAGS Central Services Division (CSD) cleaned, primed and painted over what was a white wall in the colors Enos selected. He chose vibrant colors that “represent the ecosystem of the Hawaiian Islands.”
Now, Enos is ready to invite the public to help fill in the literal blanks.
If you are coming, please sign up at [email protected] so we can bring the appropriate amount of supplies. Thanks!
Please note: if you are coming to paint, please wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained. Enos will have brushes and paint.
You do not need artistic experience – the pattern is easy to emulate and Enos is there to answer questions.
We will be using latex house paint, so we are inviting middle school-aged children and up to join the process. Your younger ones are welcome to come and watch with your supervision, but it might not be appropriate for them to join. Thank you for understanding.
Light refreshments will be offered. Bathrooms are inside the building.
You may park for free in the same parking lot you are there to paint. Only one entrance will be unlocked for this event – use the one on Beretania Street. There are 47 public stalls. Please do not park in any stalls marked “Reserved” or “Restricted.” Thank you.
Media is welcome to cover and participate.
