In commemoration of the September 2 birthday of Her Majesty Queen Liliʻuokalani, and as part of continual efforts to support access to its public archival collections, the Hawaiʻi State Archives is publishing a list of the most requested, and some of the most significant, original documents relating to Hawaiʻi’s last reigning monarch. The list contains a reference number for each document. A link is provided for those documents that have been scanned and are available online—the remaining materials can be viewed in person in our reference room with the provided reference number.

Mea Liliuʻuokalani Exhibition Contents
Nani Na Pua by Liliʻuokalani
Composed in 1860, this was Lili‘uokalani’s first published song by a United States firm (Oliver Ditson Company of Boston) in 1869. It was also one of the first Hawaiian songs to be honored in that fashion.

He Mele Lahui Hawaii by Liliʻuokalani
In 1867, Kamehameha V asked Lili‘u to write a National Anthem for Hawai‘i. It was published in Honolulu in 1867. Included is a short note to her brother (Kalākaua) in English.
