ARCHIVES VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTION

Aloha, The Public Archives of Hawaiʻi collects, preserves and makes available to the public Hawai’i government records of permanent value and historically significant materials. Our government records date from the monarchy to the current legislative session, and we also have private collections of individuals and organizations, photographs, maps, artifacts, and library collections specializing in Hawaiian history, culture and Pacific voyages.

Major Objectives/Duties:
Volunteers will be assisting in various activities, such as arranging, preserving and describing accretions to existing series or assisting in the creation, organization, and helping to provide access to Hawaiʻi State Archives’ digital assets.

Minimum Qualification:
Experience using computers and various applications such as databases; spreadsheets, word processors, image viewers and editing software.

Training and/or Preparation:
Library science or archives management coursework, or experience working in a library or archival setting is preferred, but on-site training will be provided to committed and enthusiastic volunteers!

Time and Place:
Time:  Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., excluding state holidays.
Place: Hawaiʻi State Archives, Iolani Palace Grounds, 364 S. King Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813.

Minimum Time Commitment:
160 total hours with at least 4 hours a week at a minimum of 2 hours a day.

On the Job Supervision:
Archivists will supervise Archives volunteers.
